After a year’s hard fighting in the Italian campaign, 1st Loyals embarks at Taranto under orders for Palestine, where they are to ‘rest, reorganize and retrain.’ Since landing at Anzio one year and 8 days before, it is estimated that about 70 officers and 1,600 men have served with the battalion. In their final Apennines campaign, 2 officers and 34 men have been killed, 7 officers and 157 men wounded, and 12 men reported missing.
