Using speed and surprise, 11th East Lancashires – the Accrington Pals – attack at La Becque and advance to a depth of nearly 2,000 yards, taking 12 machine-guns, 3 mortars and 2 artillery pieces and defeating a counter-attack. Casualties totalled 247, but when relieved after 48 hours of heavy fighting the ‘Pals’ receive many compliments for their gallant conduct
