This Day In History: 1861-06-25

Under orders for Canada, the 30th Foot (later 1st East Lancashires) embarks at Liverpool for Halifax, Nova Scotia on Brunel’s enormous SS Great Eastern, the first charter of an ocean liner for the movement of troops. The huge ship carries an unprecedented 3,031 passengers and crew, and 200 horses, and Colonel Mauleverer of the 30th commands the troops.
