This Day In History

  • 1801 30th and 40th Regiments (later 1st East Lancashires and 1st South Lancashires respectively) fight at the decisive Battle of Alexandria, which dooms Napoleon's attempt to conquer Egypt. At the end of the campaign, both regiments awarded the distinction of a Sphinx badge with the word Egypt superimposed, which they and their successors proudly carry on their colours and badges ever afterwards.
