This Day In History

1812 Peninsular War. The 2 / 30th Foot (later 1st East Lancashires), as part of the 5th Division, hold the crossing of the river Carrion at Vlilamuriel against the attack of General Maucune for most of the day. This allows Wellington to continue his retreat from Burgos unmolested.
1854 Battle of Balaklava. 80 men from the 30th and 47th Regiments stand to their arms on the flanks of the 93rd Highlanders - the famed "Thin Red Line" - and play their full part in hurling back the Russian cavalry.
