This Day In History

  • 1814 82nd Foot (later 2nd South Lancashires) suffer 31 casualties at the Battle of Orthez, their final fight as the French retreat into France in the last stages of the Peninsular War
  • 1863 88th Lancashire Rifle Volunteer Corps (LRVC) forms at Haslingden.
  • 1900 Battle of Pieters Hill. With his battle-cry "Remember men, the eyes of Lancashire are watching you today," Lt Col MacCarthy O'Leary leads the 1st South Lancashires into the main assault. The Colonel dies with 5 of his men, but at last the road to besieged Ladysmith is finally open.
